Google Reader is (in my opinion) a much under-used and under-valued Google app. Until I discovered it I didn't use RSS feeds that much because I couldn't find a reader that looked good, was free and easy to use. Google Reader is all three - and with some great functionality. Since I've started using it I've subscribed to about 30 blogs and every day get lots of useful content delivered straight to me. I don't even have to leave the comfort of my iGoogle page. So here are my top 5 uses for the Google Reader..

* Read your favourite blogs/webpages

This is Google Reader's primary purpose. Anytime you find a blog or webpage you think you'll read regularly, just look for the RSS feed logo or a 'Subscribe via RSS' button, click it and you should (if you use IE or Firefox) be able to import it straight into the reader. Nearly every webpage worth visiting will have an RSS feed now. And it's not just blogs - there's a feed for BBC News and Sport.

* Keep up to date with company news and buzz

If you have an online company then one essential thing you need to do is visit blogsearch.google.com regularly and check out what bloggers are saying about your company (and your competitors). Type in a company name and you'll see an RSS feed option near the bottom of the page. Click it and subscribe - and whenever anyone blogs about you, you'll know with Google Reader. In addition, visit google.com/news and check for news stories about your company (and competitors) and again subscribe. If there's any news, blogs, press releases - whether good or bad - you'll know and you'll be able to deal with it accordingly.

Clicking the 'Discover new feeds' option will let you find new feeds that match fairly closely the type of things you're already reading and is great for finding new content. 'Trends' doesn't seem to have huge value (or I can't think of any) but is nice to see which feeds you read more than others and what times of the day do you read them. Starring items is a way of marking items for looking at later - something you need to do if you end up with hundreds of posts. 'Share' lets you mark an item to share with any friend's you have in your Google contacts that also use Google Reader (they will need a Google account).

Since millions of people have Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail or Google accounts, I'll walk you through adding a news feed to your MSN home page. Go to http://www.my.msn.com and sign in. If you don't already have a hotmail account, go ahead and create one. If you'd prefer, you can go to http://my.yahoo.com and do the same) It only takes a minute go get a new account.

After signing in to My MSN, you'll see quite an array of news, weather, sports, ads, stock quotes, local information etc. Think of this as your canvas, and you're free to arrange or remove the information how you see fit. Each of these sections you see can me easily moved or deleted. To move them, just click and drag from the top right of each subject area. To remove them, click the minus (-) sign in the top left of the subject area. Feel free to delete them all, since you can always add them back later.

Now go to top left of the screen, right above the "Welcome" area you'll see "Add content" below your name. When you go there, you get four choices (Tabs) for adding content. The default tab that comes up is "Search". and from here you have four options and each is clearly defined. If you know the exact web address (URL) for a company's newsfeed, you can enter it right here. The other three tabs might be worth exploring too, since they let you browse by company names and subjects. Then you just click a box for all you want.

After signing in to My Yahoo, you'll notice that there are already several news feeds from Reuters listed there, with "Top stories", "world News", "Politics" and "Business". Above those stories, you'll see a big yellow box in the center explaining how you can "Add Content". Click the link to "add content" and you'll come up with a search box allowing you to "find content" about a given subject. Type in a search phrase, and you'll be presented with search results that all have an "Add" button next to them. Hit the "Add" button by the ones you want, and then hit the "Finished" button at the top right, and you're done. You just added that RSS news feed to your My Yahoo page. Scroll down at the My Yahoo main page, and you'll see those news headlines you added at the bottom of your list. To rearrange the order of your news feeds, just hit the small "edit" button at the top right of each news section. To remove a news feed, just hit the X like you would to close any window.

Customizing your own news feeds

Now suppose you don't need to "find" a news feed on a subject, because you already know you want to add a particular one. Well that's easy too. Al you have to do is identify what the "RSS feed URL" is for the information you want to add. Most blogs or news organizations show you these now on their websites.

Look for a small orange box on the website that says XML or the words "RSS Feed" or "News feed" and click on it. In the case of large organizations, like CNN for example, you'll be taken to a page with a nice set of instructions, and a whole list of RSS news feed URL's that you can manually copy and paste into your news reader.

Sometimes though, you'll be taken to a page that looks like gibberish code. Don't let that scare you like it did me the first time I saw it! When that happens, you are actually looking right at the feed itself, and all you have to do is copy and paste what's in the address bar of your web browser, right into your news reader. That's called "knowing the specific URL of the feed" on MSN, and ""Add RSS by URL" in Yahoo.

In My Yahoo, to manually add a news feed, go to the "add content" area, and choose the link to the right of the Find button that says "Add RSS by URL". Once you paste your URL in that window and hit "add" the news headlines should show up there. If they don't, then you may have copied the URL wrong, or added a space at the end. Then just hit the "Add to My Yahoo" button and you're done! In MSN, you'll paste the URL of the news feed right into the search box, then check the box when it shows the result.

Delivering exactly what you want and only when you want is how the internet is supposed to work. Things are only getting better.

In researching this article, I notice that My Yahoo seems to be having problems adding certain manual URL's. Oh well. Nothings perfect.

Science affects healthy lifestyles in many ways, such as whether where we live has us living under a palm tree, or a pine tree, or a cactus bush. And what we have seen happening in the past half century is affecting us all. My good fortune as a teen was that our family moved from the Pacific Northwest climate of Vancouver Canada to the sub tropical climate of Los Angeles California in 1956. I loved the experience and made many friends. But for my father it was too much of everything; the traffic, commute, demands and within the year we were back in Vancouver.

By age 19 I had moved to the largest island off the west coast of the America's, Vancouver Island and have lived at the southern tip, Victoria since. It seemed to me we should be able to grow some hardy version, as we now do, of the majestic tall palm trees that line fine old boulevards of Beverly Hills, and I read all I could, sent for and studied weather patterns. In particular, since Victoria had the same coldest month January average temperature as Seattle and Portland at 39.5 farenheit. The areas west of the Mississippi had mildest climates for their latitude at the outer tips of the west coast right up to Alaska. But the Washington Windmill Fan Palm now is growing tall up to and including Vancouver Island and the surrounding Gulf Islands in Canada and San Juan Islands in America.

But this changed quickly to freezing winters at the north-south mountains, the Coast Range, and the Cascades down to the mighty Sierra Nevada mountains that secure western California as an area that seldom knows an extended cold. The great change was always coming down either the coastal route and the scruffier palms all the way down from Canada give way at Eureka to mansion with a mighty palm as from Beverly Hills. And if you are coming south on the train next to the now interstate you see such as sight as you come down from those huge mountains that protect California and look at tall Beverly Hills type palms in Redding.

And you know you will see these wonderful trees all the way to San Diego. Here grow citrus crops of lemons and oranges! The January winter average temperature then was 45 F and that made all the difference. That inland valley is protected by the wide gap of San Francisco Bay that fills the inland valleys north and south with a mild tule fog. So my observation then and now is that a freezing winter average temperature range from about 40 up to 45 creates this new cornucopia of plenty. And I get a surprise when new statistics show Seattle now is above 41 F in January.

In Victoria 72 miles as the crow flies from Seattle our mild English weather island is now growing the north China Changsha Mandarin Oranges in protected places and the hardier bananas of north Japan, while California heats up too much and the former vineyards are so dry they are on fire. It is the same on the east coast, and in between.

This is a massive opportunity for extending precious crops and those in the path of the warming winds from the south are wise to begin adapting now. We need to ensure to deal with the issues on the downside, including needing gondolas to tend our oranges and avocados, which science predicts will soon be possible as far north as Canada. Hello? It is here, the future that is. Get your plants on your sunny side of the street, or the house.

The US has been classified as the greediest country in the world with the amount of fossil fuels that are used in proportion to population and refusal to join other countries in an all out effort to combat global warming. The fact that America has left it up to individuals and companies alike to make their own choices in the way of cleaning up the US is sad and pathetic and typical of politicians who do not want to be true leaders. Oh; what was the reason they were voted into office?

The lake of plastic that is floating in the South Pacific has to be reduced and others prevented from forming or else we will not have oceans to enjoy and wildlife may become extinct as so many are already on the red list of endangered species.

Is Web Audio and Video Really the Way to Reach Your Prospects?

Nearly every time I check my mail there's at least one web guru expounding the benefits of using audio and video on web sites and in e-mail promotions. It's become the hottest new toy for the masses and the hottest new way to impress your prospects and make the sales come rolling in.

Or has it?

Not long ago I read a report stating that over 40% of internet users had high speed. That's good. But that means nearly 60% do not - so if you're counting on your video presentation to reel in those customers, that's really bad.

Some internet marketers have told me the people without high speed don't matter - they can't afford to buy anything anyway. I beg to differ. In my part of the world, the more money you have, the more likely you are to buy land and build in an area where you cannot get high speed. You might not even get a phone line.

People come to our part of North Idaho for peace and privacy - the ones with big budgets wouldn't dream of moving in to town where there's a neighbor on either side. Believe me, I served real estate buyers for 19 years, and even the majority of buyers with no money asked for a spot in the country.

And what about all of us average folks who choose to live in the country? We're not the mega-rich, but we certainly do buy things over the internet.

The situation presents more than one problem to consider: First, if that video component makes your page load slowly, a good number of your prospects will never see it, OR the rest of your content. People in a hurry won't wait.

Second, even if your prospects have the patience to wait for your message to load, they might not be able to see it when it does.

Just today my "city son" with a high speed connection sent me link to a myspace video about dolphins, so I tried to watch it. Forget it. It plays for 3 seconds and stops for 4, then plays for 2 and stops for 5, and on and on. It just isn't worth trying to watch.

But that's not the worst problem. When my dial-up speed of 28 was threatening to push me over the edge, I decided to bite the bullet and pay the price for satellite service. That's fine. Most pages load a lot faster so now I can do research for my clients and still remember what I was looking for when I get there.

But - if I download over 200 megabytes in 24 hours, everything stops. My internet just plain quits moving.

Would I click on a link to watch a video advertisement? Not on your life! My megabytes are precious and I won't waste them.

There is one saving grace. If there's something I really want to hear, such as an interview with someone interesting, or a copywriting seminar, I can wait until midnight and listen without counting against my daily use. That's the period between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Eastern.

I still don't watch the videos, however, because that start and stop routine is not conducive to understanding what in the world they're trying to say. It does provide some funny photos - guys with their mouths open mid-word often wear entertaining expressions.

If you're about to install audio and video on your site, do it carefully.

Make sure your message can also be accessed in print, and make sure that your visitors have a choice about downloading that audio or video. No one on satellite wants to waste their precious download megabytes - so you just might make them angry enough to leave and never return.

If you have great content to share, and in that content you've inserted a sales message for your product, make it easy and convenient for your prospects. Give them a choice of audio, video, or printed words. Show them you care about what's best and most convenient for them.

Of course, my favorite way to access audio is to download it to a CD and take it along in my car. That's when I've got the most time to listen and pay attention. If you're trying to reach people with way too much to do, consider giving them that option. If your message is good, it might be heard a half dozen times.

If the only way to get your message across is by video - because of hands-on demonstration perhaps - first be sure you present it in a manner that can be downloaded and watched after the download is finished - to avoid the start and stop syndrome.

Then let them know up front how many megabytes they will be using and accompany the offer to view that video with a powerful sales presentation. Your copywriting must be at it's most persuasive to show your prospects exactly what's in it for them when they take the time to watch.

A caution here: Make sure you really do offer useful information and not just a sales pitch. If you make people feel duped you'll soon be seeing your name on blogs and message boards in a very unflattering light.

Is MyWorldPlus Dead?

You don't hear much about the MyWorldPlus program any more these days. At least, I haven't! My email Inbox has been curiously devoid of invitations, and chatter on the "Work From Home" forums has dropped off dramatically from the hey-day of January & February of 2007.

Of course, the question in the title is purely rhetorical! MyWorldPlus continues to exist - you just don't hear about it much any more. The hype has died, and what remains is a solid business model that continues to grow, improve and satisfy.

I signed up just before Launch last year, and continue to use the discounts, coupons, and other money-saving. Many people I know that joined around the same time have long since moved on to the next "flashy" opportunity. Many were in just for the "make money from signing somebody else up" slant, and didn't understand that they were purchasing a real product. A product with value.

Let me explain: Your membership fee allows MyWorldPlus to negotiate special discounts for its members. Many of the 'deals' you find are exclusive. The value of the product (in this case, membership in MyWorldPlus) is the money you can save in your regular, day-to-day purchases. Full RSS or Summary Feed?

I'm not the first one to chime in on this topic, mostly because I've gone both ways and I can make pretty valid arguments from either side. But I've finally settled it in my mind which is "best". Full RSS feeds are better than summary feeds.

Why?

I can answer that only from the perspective of a skimmer and scanner.

When I browse through my RSS feeds, I'm first looking for titles that draw my interest. If your title doesn't make me want to read I scroll right past it. But that doesn't necessarily mean you have a bad title, not every title is going to make everybody want to read. There are just a lot of things that I don't care about and many feeds I read don't always have posts that strike my particular fancy.

Once I see a title that makes me think I might want to read on, well, then I start skimming through the post. I might read a few of the first sentences and then start skipping down to link text, headings, boldings, and use those to create a judgment of whether I should take time to actually read the full post.

Summaries don't have eye appeal

What? Your summary feed doesn't have headings, boldings, bullets or anything else that catches my eye? Well, you better hope that your first few sentences really grab me. And I mean I really have to be convinced to click through. It's a mental thing really. I don't mind clicking if I know I want to read something, but not if I just think I might want to read it. The summary may be partially convincing, but not totally. I'm then forced to move away from my primary screen to another screen because I think I might be interested. You're making me think to hard.

Countless times, after reading a summary, I've been on the edge. I think I'm interested, but not entirely sure. Do I click or do I keep scanning available blog posts. Sometimes I opt for the former, wishing I opted for the latter. Now, more times than not, now, I opt for the latter. If the summary isn't entirely convincing I won't click.

It's a shame really because there are probably some decent insights in there somewhere. But you hid them all behind a not-so-telling summary. Or heck, maybe your summary was dead on and your information just isn't my cup of tea... if you had a full feed I still might have gleaned a little something of value from your insight.

Are you missing anything by providing a full feed? Sure, you got the click, right? Your traffic numbers go up and maybe you can sell your ad space for a few cents more this month from last... but there is not always value in it for me, which means there is often no real value in it for you.

Do you want to be read or do you want to be visited? Do you want people to hear what you have to say or do you just want your page numbers to go up? Do your yourself a favor, provide a full feed. You'll be less likely to lose subscribers and you'll definitely gain more readers.

Meditation usually keeps me in a very blissed out or peaceful state. Yet a few mornings ago I found myself swimming in negativity. It was the usual stuff - money problems, blaming others, and a whirlwind of thinking.

I even had trouble starting the car.

What the heck was going on?

Then I realized what I had done the night before. I'd watched a dvd rental of the movie "The Interpreter". By most standards the movie was fantastic. There was brilliant acting by academy award winners Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn.

The story was absolutely riveting. White knuckles all around. The timing was brilliant.

Yet the next morning I was swimming in an emotional swamp. That was me, the meditation devotee, rubbing elbows with Swamp Thing.

It might have had a lot to do with what I put into my mind just before bedtime. The movie began with graphic surprise murders committed by children.

Later there was fear of the unknown complete with the message that you can't trust anyone.

This kind of stuff can temporarily undo the benefits of meditation.

But the negativity continued.

The bad guy was a former humanitarian who turned into the mass murdering dictator that killed the leading lady's parents.

There was character building followed by murders. This happened over and over again.

There was a bus explosion inviting viewers to believe that it's unsafe to ride public transportation.

The show continues with opportunities to seek revenge. To kill or not to kill, that is the question.

Yuck!

Maybe this video triggered my emotional slump. Maybe the slump came from some unknown combination of factors.

The point is that we can use what we know to climb out of slumps. And we can make choices that help us minimize the number and depth of slumps.

I was able to climb upwards with the help of an observer meditation and some bliss exercises. It took six minutes to feel much better and another twenty minutes to feel a whole lot better.

We can always make a choice. We can select the most uplifting activity. We can choose what music to play. And, of course, we can choose what movies and TV shows to watch.

You can watch CSI and view horrendous images throughout the television show. For a bonus, you can hear the words "serial killer" repeated ten times in a two minute period.

Or you can make a different choice. You might choose to watch something such as "Joan of Arcadia" or "My Name is Earl". They'll remind you of some valuable life principles. FYI, these great shows are available as dvd rentals.

How do we know what's uplifting?

Using a digital photography green screen is easy. The screens are used in both still photography and videos although it's more common in video photography.

First off, you need an actual green screen. Despite the name, this can be either green or blue in color. The choice of color will largely be dictated by what you are photographing as you want to make it easy for your software to isolate the intended image with you.

Purpose made green screens are readily available from around $20. You can look for them in places like eBay, Amazon or your local photo store. Alternatively, you can make your own from fabric or even by painting a roll of paper. So long as the color is consistent, you'll be fine.

At its most basic, you will need to trace round the outline of your chosen image. Programs like Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop have tools that will help you to do this. But it may still take a while to tweak the places where the automatic software recognition program isn't as accurate as you may like. This is where the contrast between the green screen and your subject matter comes in handy as it gives your chosen software a much better chance of doing a good job with as little of your help as possible.

Once you've got your image selected, you then need to use another option to digitally "lift" the image and then drop it onto your chosen background. Again, this will vary with your software package but providing you can get the software to just copy the selected area, you'll be fine.

It may pay you to practice doing this with a simple shape such as a rectangle or a circle so that you don't waste lots of time tracing round a complicated image only to find you press the wrong key at the wrong time. The description tag is coded differently for HTML and XHTML.

use spaces ie dog grooming training caring...and you'll use less words.

4. Word order

Place your most important keywords or keyword phrases at the beginning of your keywords meta tag.

8. Repeat the keywords in your headline and content

To get started, go to Yahoo Pipes and register for your free account. Once you have logged in, click the "Create a Pipe" button. You'll notice the canvas appears. Start by simply dragging the module titled "Fetch Feed" from the library pane on the left side onto your working canvas. One by one enter the feeds that you would like to combine. Click the "+" sign to the left of URL to add another feed. Repeat the steps as necessary. Now drag out modules from the library such as "Sort" and "Filter". Make sure you connect each module by its connecters. Once you have customized your pipe, click the save button and name the feed. Now click properties and give your feed a description and tags. Congratulations! Now save and publish your feed.
